Podcast: gun violence, U.S. Supreme Court, victims’ response (June 29, 2022)

June 29, 2022 (recorded)

Today’s podcast is with victims/survivors of gun violence from around the U.S. as we discuss the rise of mass shootings, the U.S. Supreme Court decision to expand gun rights, and the way forward. Each victim of violence will tell his/her story. The speakers include Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins (Illinois), Amanda Wilcox (Colorado/California), Bill Jenkins (Illinois), and Azim Khamisa (California). We also discuss the use of restorative justice in response to gun violence and conflict. RJI is grateful for the individual work of each survivor in the area of gun violence, violence prevention, and support for restorative justice.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision (June 23, 2022) reversed a New York statute enacted in 1913. The Court declared, for the first time, that the U.S. constitution protects an individual’s right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense.  Court decision: New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn., INC. v. RJI is committed to bringing restorative justice to bear after extreme violence which supports victims/survivors of violence, urges offender accountability, and recognizes that crime and violence injures communities. Join RJI as we work the problem.
