Manual for Restorative Meetings in Cases of Serious Crime-Europe (February 2024)

RJI is very pleased to share with you the following manual on restorative meetings provided to RJI by our colleague Arja Konttila, PhD in Psychology, Restorative Dialogue in Serious Crimes, Coordinator, Senior Specialist Prison and Probation Service of Finland. Dr. Konttila is an Affiliate of RJI. RJI is a strong advocate for in-prison restorative justice programming, including using such programming with serious and violent cases.

This introduction to the Manual for Restorative Meetings in Cases of Serious Crime was prepared by Dr. Konttila. The link to the manual is shown at the end of this post. Dr. Konttila’s introduction:

This  important Manual for Restorative Meetings in Cases of Serious Crime (2023) was published under The JUSTIN Erasmus+ project (4/2022-2/2024) in partnership between the  Czech Institute for Restorative Justice and the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic.  Foreign partners were colleagues from the Belgian organization Moderator and from the Prison and Probation Service of Finland (RISE).  This manual of serious crimes is an important handbook, because it provides help and support, so that new restorative programs can be implemented effectively, reliably and genuinely in accordance with restorative principles in connection with serious crimes. The Manual for Restorative Meetings in Cases of Serious Crime contains a versatile package of information on, among other things, various restorative practices, trauma-informed approach, the stages of the restorative process, the conditions for the participation of perpetrators and victims/relatives of victims, about the needs of both parties and the competencies of facilitators. Finnish practice of Restorative Dialogue in Serious Crimes has been carried out in Finland since 2013 with good experiences.  I had many conversations with Czech and Slovak partners on how to do restorative dialogue in serious crimes and other restorative practices in prison context sensitively, with respect, victim- centered and trauma-informed approach.
